Right Where We Left Off

On Sunday, I had the privilege to grab brunch with one of my very best childhood friends, Michele, who was in Kansas City for a conference. Michele lives in New York. We don’t get to see one another more than about once every two to three years, but when we do, it is such a treat to reconnect with her.

Now, I’m the one traveling. I am in San Francisco for a conference at which I am a speaker. One of my closest college friends, Rahela, lives here. Though it was late when I finally arrived, she drove the 30 minutes from the suburbs to come spend a couple of hours with me. Again, we don’t get to spend enough time with one another throughout the year, but when the opportunity presents itself, we both cherish it.

As ever, in both cases, we picked up right where we left off… as if a day hadn’t gone by. Comfort level: High. Moments of awkward silence: None.

Yes, we did the complete data download with one another… shared what is going on with husbands, kids, parents, friends, careers, volunteer life, travel, etc., etc., etc. It’s as if we just saw one another yesterday, and yet, loads of time has gone by and there is much to share.

It is friends like these who, though they are not part of our daily lives, are always, always resident in our minds and among our most important relationships. It is friends like these with whom we can comfortably share our triumphs, defeats, deepest fears and loftiest dreams.

Need a little boost of energy? Would a belly laugh help? How about a good cry? Who will help you to have one of these moments? Who, when you see this individual, makes you feel absolutely elated.

For me, Michele and Rahela are two of these people. So grateful to them for making the time despite busy lives and crazy schedules. Thanks, girls, can’t wait to catch up with you again soon. I am more than confident we will pick up right where we left off.
