I is for Image

When you think of how you perceive yourself, does it match the way others see you?  Are you projecting the image you desire?  I’m not talking about being someone you are not, or about faking it ‘til you make it… I’m suggesting that you have a view of who you are and behave in a manner that communicates that effectively and accurately to others.  It’s being the very best version of yourself at home, at work and in the community.

Unsure of how to do this?  Consider what your core values are.  Think about the ways to want to be thought of by those around you.  Model the behavior you want to be associated with.   Surround yourself with people who help you to best achieve that.

One other way that image manifests itself is through appearance.  Though what we look like or how we dress or how we groom ourselves seems like they should not matter vis-à-vis the way we act or communicate, in truth appearance is the first filter through which we are judged.  As such, it is important to outfit ourselves in ways that communicate who we are.  So brush your teeth, comb your hair, clip your nails, polish your shoes, wear professional attire commensurate with your job,… you get the idea.

Are you curious about how you’re being perceived?  Select a handful of friends, trusted colleagues, mentors and the like – then ask them.  Have them provide you with five words that come to mind when they think of you.  Encourage them to share one thing that you could do to improve your image in the community.  Remember, these are people who care about you – be open to their input.

When you are clear about who you are and have a vision for the way you want to be perceived, you will be able to align those images in ways that help you to be your best self.

Happy Networking!

P.S. – My son’s idea for today’s blog topic was “I is for Ian.”  He’s right, in my life, I is always for Ian. Love you, Buddy!
