A Different Kind of Thanksgiving

A lot of people are disappointed; today is a different kind of Thanksgiving.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) made a strong plea to the American people:  Do not travel this Thanksgiving and enjoy your holiday meal only with people in your household with whom you have lived for the past two weeks.  Whether or not you chose to heed the CDC’s advice, there is a sense of concern and a pall in the air.  So, this is what it’s like to celebrate family traditions in the midst of a pandemic.  Drat!

There is good news, though:

  1. Game on!  Thanksgiving was NOT canceled.

  2. Come ‘n get it!  You can still enjoy the same delicious dishes you’ve been feasting on since childhood… turkey (maybe a turducken for you?), stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie… my mouth is watering!  AND… the even better news… there will be more leftovers since fewer people will be dining on yours in the first place!  Gobble.  Gobble.

  3. Virtual gatherings are the hot new trend!  You can still see your loved ones, near and far, through the power of the information super-highway.  Schedule a video call with the people in your life who you would normally be sitting across the table from and enjoy one another’s company across the internet.  In fact, Zoom has lifted its 40-minute restriction on its free plans in honor of the holiday!

  4. You’ll have plenty of time to reach out!  In between meals, naps, football games, and Black Friday shopping lists, make another list:  A list of three to five people who you want to reconnect with ASAP.  In fact, call them today (they are home with their immediate family, too) – and throughout the weekend.  Tell them you’ve been thinking about them and that you hope they are staying healthy and safe… ask how you can help… you get the idea.  Go on… right now… make your first call.  You’ll be glad you did – so will your recipient.

  5. Today is perfect for expressing GRATITUDE!  Think of the people in your life – your family, your friends, your colleagues, your neighbors, your community members, your essential workers – for whom you are immeasurably grateful.  Let them know.  Show them you care.  Deliver groceries, a handwritten greeting card, extra PPE, a curbside virtual hug… whatever it takes.  Even in the wake of doom and gloom, understanding that a lot of people are hurting right now, count your blessings, hold your loved ones tight in your heart, express your appreciation… goodness is all around us!

I’m deeply grateful for YOU!  THANK YOU for being a member of the CLC Community.  You allow me to pursue my purpose:  To Connect, Inspire and Empower Community.  My appreciation for you is boundless.

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy, safe and meaningful Thanksgiving holiday.  Wear your mask.  Wash your hands.  Eat another piece of pie.

Happy Networking!
