Today’s fortune, “The Real Kindness Comes from Within You,” is so fitting as today is World Kindness Day.
Kindness, a universal and timeless virtue, is a quality that emanates from the depths of an individual’s character. It’s a fundamental aspect of human nature that originates from within, rooted in our capacity for empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. Kindness is not something we put on like a costume; rather, it’s an innate inclination to treat others with respect, understanding, and benevolence.
This inner wellspring of kindness is nourished by our experiences, values, and personal growth. It thrives when we learn to appreciate the struggles and joys of our fellow human beings, fostering a connection that transcends superficial differences. Kindness, therefore, isn’t a fleeting gesture, but a way of life that reflects one’s core beliefs and principles.
In a world often marked by challenges and division, the significance of nurturing kindness from within cannot be overstated. It is the foundation of stronger relationships, harmonious communities, and a more compassionate society, reminding us that the true source of kindness lies deep within the human heart.
In the lead-up to World Kindness Day each year, my dear friend, Dr. Michelle Robin, hosts a “31 Days of Kindness” campaign through her organization, Small Changes Big Shifts, during which she shares ideas and encouragement to act with kindness. From a relationship-building perspective, here are a few of my favorites:
- Call and check in with a colleague, client, or contact you care about
- Donate your skills to someone in need
- Celebrate your loved one’s important days
- Write an online review for your favorite coffee shop or restaurant
- Add some joy to your workspace
Additionally, I have the privilege to serve on the board of an amazing not-for-profit organization, SevenDays, which seeks to overcome hate by promoting kindness and understanding through education and dialogue. Through its core themes, SevenDays encourages professionals to take action in the following ways:
- LOVE: Reach out to your clients, associates, and team members. Offer appreciation by sending heartfelt messages, buying lunch, and recognizing positive impact. Show your sincere attention and care.
- DISCOVER: Learn, engage, and share. Learn something new about your clients and team members. Facilitate activities that help them get to know each other on a deeper level.
- OTHERS: Engage with “the other” in your workplace. Sometimes we all feel like “the other,” the different person in the room. Find “the other” in your workplace; through dialogue, you can become friends. We have more similarities than differences.
- CONNECT: Your workplace + the community. As a company, select a local charity as a recipient of time, talent, or treasure from your workplace. Consider volunteering together.
- YOU: Take care of yourself – mind, body, and soul. Encourage your clients and team members to take care of themselves. Acknowledge the importance of self-care to help revitalize and refresh yourself and others.
- GO: Get out into the world. Help your team be more active personally and in the world. Team building activities can be more successful when completed outdoors. Fresh air, sunshine, and kindness work well together!
- ONWARD: Determine what will propel you forward! Think about the positive impact you can have on those around you. Make a ripple. Change the world.
Remember, real kindness comes from within you. Happy World Kindness Day! Happy Networking!
