One Size Fits None: Mass Customization Made Personal

Last week, I was invited to a cool brand activation event hosted by adidas and Famous Footwear at the Wilshire Plaza Famous Footwear store in Liberty, Missouri. I brought along my friends Claire and Katie, and honestly, from the moment we walked in, it was clear that the organizers had put real thought into the experience.

Before the event, we were asked to share not just our shoe sizes, but our preferred style from a curated selection of the “Adizero” line. That small act of data collection set the tone for everything that followed. When we arrived and checked in, our shoes were already waiting for us, along with an adidas-branded bag. No hunting, no guessing. Just a seamless, personal welcome.

From there, we were invited to customize our sneakers with up to three charms chosen from hundreds of options, and our bags with colorful patches, all expertly applied by the Kansas City-based team at The Babe Standard. Add in local favorites like Blush & Bloom Soda‘s custom sodas, a delightful ice cream vendor, a photo booth, and a sticker machine from Nivis Stickies, and you had an evening that was equal parts social, creative, and genuinely fun.

This is what I call mass customization: understanding your audience’s desires, curating an experience that feels deeply personal, and making people feel seen and appreciated in ways that build lasting loyalty. A few takeaways for anyone thinking about their own events or client experiences:

  • Know your audience before they arrive. Gathering preferences in advance allowed adidas and Famous Footwear to greet guests with something already tailored to them. That kind of proactive personalization is powerful.
  • Blend national reach with local flavor. Pairing global brands with local vendors like Blush & Bloom, Nivis Stickies, and The Babe Standard gave the event texture and community. It felt rooted, not just polished.
  • Give people choices within a curated container. Hundreds of charms and patches sounds like a lot, but the selection was organized in a way that felt engaging and easy to navigate. That balance is the sweet spot of mass customization.

When people feel genuinely considered, they remember it, they tell their friends, and they come back.

Happy Networking!
