Powerful Messages Written By Hand

My fortune told me so:  You will soon receive a letter from a loved one.  I was so excited!  And, sure enough, as if by magic, a letter arrived.  It was actually from a student in a recent certificate course I taught on networking.  She said, “Thank you for the most incredible class and by far the best professor I’ve had!  I’ve learned so much from you and I plan on utilizing all my networking skills every day.”  Yep.  It reduced me to tears.

In today’s digital world, it’s easy to take for granted the power of a handwritten note. After all, we can send emails and text messages in seconds, and they’re just as effective at communicating our thoughts and feelings, right?

Wrong.

Handwritten notes have a special power that digital communications simply can’t match. They show that the sender took the time to put extra thought and effort into their message, and they make the recipient feel valued and appreciated.

Here are just a few of the reasons why handwritten notes are so powerful:

  • They’re more personal. When you write a note by hand, you’re putting a piece of yourself into it. Your unique handwriting and the time you took to write the note show that you care about the recipient.
  • They’re more memorable. Studies have shown that people are more likely to remember the contents of a handwritten note than a digital message. This is because handwritten notes engage multiple senses, including sight, touch, and smell.
  • They’re more meaningful. A handwritten note shows that you’re willing to go the extra mile to connect with someone. It’s a thoughtful gesture that can make a big difference in someone’s day.

Do you have someone to thank for their kindness or generosity?  Might you be primed to congratulate someone on an accomplishment?  Did a friend graduate from a special program? Get a new job? Have a baby? A handwritten note is a wonderful way to show your support and celebrate their success.

Similarly, one of the kindest actions you can take is to offer condolences when someone is grieving. A handwritten note can be a source of comfort and support during difficult times.

Handwritten notes tell someone how much you care. Sometimes, the simplest words can have the biggest impact. A handwritten note expressing how much you love and appreciate them is a gift they will cherish.

If you’re not sure what to write in your handwritten note, don’t worry. Just keep it simple and sincere. Share a specific memory or anecdote, express your gratitude, or offer your support. Even a few kind words can make a big difference.

Happy Networking!
